Tucker Federal S & L Briarcliff Road
Plans for Tucker Federal’s first branch were announced in the January 1965 Atlanta Journal. It said the branch would be at Briarcliff and Henderson Mill Roads and open in June 1965. Briarcliff Village shopping center was to open across the road. Ads for the Briarcliff branch later appeared in 1966, listing the address as 4855 Briarcliff Road.
Atlanta architects Cunningham and Forehand designed the Briarcliff and Buford Highway branches of Tucker Federal. The Briarcliff branch plans included a rubble weathered granite exterior and a cupola skylight.
Tucker Federal Savings and Loan began operations in downtown Tucker in 1957. In 1961 they moved into a new brick building on Main Street in Tucker. (Atlanta Journal ad, 1961)
The next branch offices for Tucker Federal were the Doraville and Dunwoody branches. By 1975, Tucker Federal had added branches at Wesley Chapel Road in Decatur, Roswell, Stone Mountain and Norcross. (Atlanta Constitution, Jan. 7 1975)
Briarcliff Village had its grand opening in 1965. Northlake Mall opened in 1971.
The Briarcliff branch of Tucker Federal advertised its location as “near the WSB tower.” The building sits in the back corner of the Briarcliff LaVista Shopping Center. Today, Michael’s and Panda Express remain in the shopping center.
The bank later became a branch of RBC Centura. RBC bought out parent company Eagle Bancshares in 2002. Next, the structure became a PNC branch, closing in 2020. (https://www.tonetoatl.com/2020/09/PNC-Bank-Closes-Northlake-Briarcliff-Branch-Tucker.html)
It appears the building has been empty since that time. The granite building is unique and hopefully in good condition and ready for a new owner.
