The Ashford in Ashford Park, Ashford Dunwoody Road
The home that sits on property at the corner of Ashford Dunwoody Road and Peachtree Road, and that is now part of the Peachtree Golf Club, was built by Samuel House in the 1850s. Sherman spent the night there on July 18, 1864, as his troops who had recently crossed the Chattahoochee River made their way towards Atlanta. House and his family had already fled the home.
The next owner was Eugene S. Luckie, followed by W. T. Ashford, who purchased the home and land in 1903, naming it Southlook. Ashford operated a nursery business on the property. Ashford Park in Brookhaven and Ashford Dunwoody Road are named for the family. When W. T. Ashford died, his daughter, Mrs. Cobb Caldwell, inherited the property. She lived in the home and continued to run the nursery business until it was sold to the developers of Peachtree Golf Club.
This Ashford Park Nurseries advertisement appears in a Yamacraw, Oglethorpe University yearbook. The yearbook is held in the archives of Oglethorpe University.
Ashford Dunwoody Road has had a few names through the years. It was once called Ashford Road in the area leading toward Peachtree Road and Dunwoody Road as it approached Dunwoody. It was also once the main road to travel between Chamblee and Dunwoody, and therefore was called Chamblee Dunwoody Road. Once present day Chamblee Dunwoody Road was constructed, the old version became Old Chamblee Dunwoody Road. A 1939 map shows the road took on the name of nearby Oglethorpe University, being called Oglethorpe Dunwoody Road. Finally, a 1945 map shows the name Ashford Dunwoody Road.
