Historic Lyon Farm in Stonecrest
Last week I had the opportunity to tour one of the oldest farms in DeKalb County, Lyon Farm, located at 4431 Lyons Road in Stonecrest, Georgia. The tour was a DeKalb Traveler program, made available to members of the DeKalb History Center and presented by staff from Arabia Mountain National Heritage Alliance.
Canneries were part of farm life
Several Georgia schools had canneries on their grounds. In 1943, Tucker, Norcross, and Chamblee High Schools were among the top Georgia schools processing canned food and helping their community.
Laundry and Iron Wash pots on the Farm
Fred Donaldson was born at Donaldson Farm in 1925 (today known as Donaldson-Bannister Farm) at the corner of Vermack Road and Chamblee Dunwoody Road in Dunwoody. One of the wash pots from the farm is still in the family at his daughter Freda’s home and Donaldson recalls how it was used by his grandmother and his parents.
