More images of early Redan School, DeKalb County

In a previous blog post, I shared information about Redan School in DeKalb County in 1916. The source of that description is “Educational Surveys of DeKalb County and Union County, Georgia.”

The photo below is from the 1916 survey book.

This Redan School image appears in the 1916 DeKalb County School Surveys book. The description reads, “Giving the school yell at Redan School.”

This photo of the school from the early 1920s is held in the archives of DeKalb History Center. Teacher Annie Lou Wellborn is shown with her students. I’m guessing Annie Lou Wellborn is the same teacher as Annie Lou Phillips.

A new Redan School was built during the Great Depression in 1937. According to the Atlanta Journal, it was a “handsome $16,000 granite school” completed with WPA (Works Progress Administration) funds. The keys to the school were received by the school board and School Superintendent E. G. Summers. (Atlanta Journal, May 16, 1937)
